Rodent Boom : The undergrowth stirs with restless rustling; mice and rats are everywhere. Perhaps a blessing... perhaps a curse.

Map Updates 2.0

Posted on July 5, 2025 by Carey

The map page has been updated and now lives at https://nocturne-rpg.com/map.php instead of on an admin-editable page - this is just due to how complex it is. Main and sub areas now have overlays highlighting the shape of them! This can be toggled off by toggling off main or sub areas using the buttons. Note: At the moment, coordinates do not show when you're hovering over the name of an area. There's some conflict with layers I'm still working out to have them behave together. So some areas you'll have to determine the square yourself based on the coordinates around it (like small areas between moondip and starfell or hearthgrove and mosscreep, where it might be hard to hover on a square without hitting one of the name hot spots) Additionally! We have our first poll below. Would you guys prefer packs to claim territories as squares, or as little areas drawn out? This poll will be left up for three days before closing. There are pros and cons to each Grid System Pros:
  • Grid squares are pretty easy to do, and we could make this editable on pack pages and auto-update the map.
  • Transparent for all users, grid borders are clearly visible.
  • Easy to track any overlaps between neighboring packs and whether a pack territory overlaps sub-area borders (such as a pack that technically lives in two sub areas, or two packs living in one sub area).
  • Works great for smaller packs.
  • Grid System Cons:
  • Grid shapes are rigid and might not match natural terrain boundaries
  • Claimed areas will be more strictly enforced, as the mileage claimed will be confined to squares that touch each other.

  • Organic System Pros:
  • Allows for more natural looking territories that follow natural terrain such as cliffs, forest, rivers, etc.
  • A bit more visually immersive, and can clearly define specific borders.
  • Packs express a bit of personality in their borders, showing their habits in the shape of the markers they put down that build up the territory.
  • Blends a little more organically into the shape of our areas and sub areas.
  • Organic System Cons:
  • Requires manual staff review and updating, does require cooperation between members and staff.
  • A little harder to discern how many square miles a pack has claimed.
  • Can't be as dynamic as packs will have to wait on approval vs entering the squares they claimed in a pack page.
  • I've included some images for how this might appear. One with grid squares marked out, and one with an organic shape that takes up approximately the same area, with terrain in mind.
