If you're unsure whether you should report a situation or have some pretty big feelings about something going on, please utilize this flow chart to determine if reporting is appropriate. If you feel the flow chart is unfair then please remember that Nocturne is a community-driven website. If you are not comfortable talking to your peers about any issue that might arise, then Nocturne may not be for you.

1. Did someone break a rule?
- No → Let it go
- Yes → Go to Step 4

2. Are you or someone else being harmed?
(This includes harassment, bullying, or targeted behavior.)
- No → Let it go
- Yes → Go to Step 4

3. Is it just something you don’t like?
(Personal preferences, posts, mature posts, styles, or ideas you disagree with.)
- Yes → let it go or speak to them about your concerns. Acknowledge they are doing nothing wrong, but that you are uncomfortable. Understand that they accommodate you because it works for both of you, not simply because you ask.
- No → Go back to Step 1

4. Have you spoken to the person directly?
- Yes → Go to Step 5
- No → Unless unsafe (with evidence of how it is unsafe), start there. Speak respectfully and assume good faith.

5. Did the conversation resolve the issue?
- Yes → Great! No further action needed.
- No → Now it’s time to escalate to a moderator.

Mods will always ask: “What steps have you taken before bringing this to us?” - this is to encourage healthy dialogue and shared accountability between members of Nocturne.
